How it works in practice
What is NT WorkSafe?
NT WorkSafe is the regulatory body responsible for enforcing workplace health and safety (WHS) laws across the Northern Territory. Their primary role is to ensure that employers meet their legal obligations to provide a safe and healthy working environment for all employees and others affected by their operations. This includes promoting safe work practices, providing guidance on WHS compliance, and investigating incidents.
When to Contact NT WorkSafe
You should contact NT WorkSafe immediately for serious workplace incidents, which include fatalities, serious injuries requiring hospitalisation, or dangerous incidents that could have resulted in serious harm. They should also be contacted for ongoing or systemic health and safety hazards that employers fail to address, or when there are concerns about non-compliance with WHS legislation. They can provide advice on your rights and obligations, and how to report concerns effectively.
Important exceptions
NT WorkSafe does not handle individual workers' compensation claims; these are managed by ReturnToWorkSA (if it was a SA query, but for NT it's NT WorkSafe which also governs workers comp). They also do not typically intervene in general employment disputes, wage issues, or human resources matters that do not directly relate to work health and safety breaches. Their focus is specifically on the prevention of workplace injury and illness, and enforcement of WHS laws, rather than personal grievances not tied to safety.
Minor incidents that do not pose an immediate risk or result in serious injury should generally be addressed internally first with your employer.
What you should do now
-
Assess and Secure the Scene: In case of an incident, ensure the immediate area is safe, and provide first aid if necessary.
-
Gather Information: Document the incident or hazard with details such as date, time, location, persons involved, and any contributing factors. Take photos if safe to do so.
-
Report to Your Employer: Inform your employer or supervisor about the incident or hazard as soon as possible, allowing them an opportunity to resolve the issue.
-
Contact NT WorkSafe: If the issue is serious, unresolved, or involves a notifiable incident, contact NT WorkSafe's reporting line or general inquiries for guidance or to lodge a formal report.
-
Cooperate with Investigations: If NT WorkSafe decides to investigate, cooperate fully by providing all requested information and assisting their officers as required.
